The 2012 edition of the Grand National Roadster Show was blessed with great weather and a record crowd. Working with the Show Promoter, John Buck, Ron Johnson once again set up a hand picked selection of vintage drag race cars (aka Cacklecars) to partake in an indoor display. Outdoors was the fire-em-up venue.

The indoor cars covered over a decade of drag racing. Representing the 1950's were Ray Lake's "Cook & Bedwell" dragster and Speed Sport roadster. The featured 1960's dragsters were the Warren, Coburn, Crow dragster, Art Chrisman's "Hustler II", two of Ron Johnson's cars Shubert & Herbert and Tommy Ivo "Barnstormer", from the NHRA Museum was the Howard Cams Rattler and from 1971 Eric Bowman's RCS "Funny Digger".

Outside was Ron Sterns with the Ratican-Jackson-Stearns A/FA and John Ewald's two top fuel cars, the BankAmericar and Mastercar.

Ewald's bunch had a special reason for firing up the dragsters and putting guests in the Firestone Complete Auto Care Indy car this year. They raised funds for the Gavin R. Stevens Foundation which is doing research to help children born with a rare retina disease, called Lebers Congenital Amaurosis, or LCA. It is hoped that one day this disease can be cured.

Their mission was to help raise funds over the weekend by auctioning off the seats in the two dragsters (and Ron Stearn's fuel altered) while getting donations from guests who wanted to sit in the Indy car for a photo op. They felt it was a success and were able to presented a check to the foundation for $1852.00. More information on the foundation and this disease can be found at: Gavin R. Stevens Foundation.

As always the best way to tell the story is with photos, so here we go.

There were signs to let the guests know what they were doing, a number of folks went to an ATM to get funds to donate.

Even though Gavin can see very little he still was able to get the feeling of the drivers seat of the Firestone Complete Auto Care Indy car.

Ewald's "Blood-Sweat&Nitro" was on display promoting the 2012 March Meet. This car is for sale.

Mike Casey, with Ron Sterns, bough the first fire up in the RJS altered.

After each seat was auctioned off, Ewald gave a talk about the history of the cars and drag racing. The object is to try to have visitors leave with more knowledge than they showed up with. The first driver in the Mastercar was Frank Earl from Bakersfield.

Race cars and hot women just seem to go together...much to the photographers delight.

Friday night Devon Merrill scratched this off his bucket list as hundreds watched the 392 Hemi in the "BankAmericar" breath fire.

Bob Danly oversees the last driver of the weekend, Joshua Schock from North Dakota.

Patrick Hutchinson bought the seat in RSJ car for the night session.

Larry Anderson came down from Oregon for the show and was top bidder for the Sunday morning fireup.

This event brings in people from all over the USA, here Scott Matthys from Kansas City gets a thrill to take home. Every fire up drew huge crowds.
